Taking action in whatever life pursuit you are working on is often a critical step in the self-improvement process. Sometimes it is necessary to do something rather than to let time pass by and do nothing. There are a few reasons why we procrastinate, and knowing how to identify them is a wealth secret everyone should know.
First, we must consider how you got to this point in the first place. Perhaps you are doing some self reflection in trying to improve your career. Perhaps you are setting out to accomplish some goals you have set for your family. You may even be attempting to change careers. No matter the reason, procrastination will hinder your progress tremendously.
As you re-discover what process you are going through, you should take a look at your "road map," or list of goals, and what you hope to accomplish from this action. Examine those lists more closely and identify your action steps. Here is where you will find the breakdown in what you want to accomplish, and what you are doing to accomplish it.
We should know that we are more productive when we do things we love. We are more efficient, more skilled and more receptive to innovation when we are passionate about something. Doing things we enjoy is a tool to help avoid procrastination on the surface.
Procrastination is a good thing sometimes. It is a defense mechanism that limits your ability to do things you are not good at. Procrastination also inhibits you from doing things that you do not love doing. By embracing this concept, one can easily see that procrastination is an effect and not a cause. For example; every Saturday morning you wake up with a terrible headache. In order to get rid of the headache, you take your favorite headache medicine.
What you have not taken into account is that every Friday, you have a few too many cocktails. You do this to the point that you wake up dehydrated the following morning, and with a severe headache. By taking the pain meds on Saturday, you are attempting to treat the effect rather than the real cause. The solution would be not to drink so much on Friday night; you wouldn't have the headache on Saturday. By cutting back on your drinks on Friday, (the cause),
You are eliminating the need for pain medicines on Saturday. In other words, you would be treating the cause of the headaches, not the effects.
As it relates to procrastination, let's just say it is your internal immune system that keeps you from wanting to do the things you are not good at or have no passion for. The way to treat this is to identify what areas you are procrastinating the most, and either stop doing those things, streamline, or delegate the tasks to someone else. Now you are able to focus on the activities you enjoy doing, you will be efficient and motivated to complete the tasks at hand.
It is no secret that procrastination can be a killer in completing projects. It can also be used as a tool to indicate that you should change who is responsible for those tasks, helping the entire team to be more efficient.
